چکیده

In this study we investigated the durational correlates of lexical stress and pitch accent at normal and fast speech rate in Dutch. Previous literature on English shows that durations of lexically unstressed vowels are reduced more than stressed vowels when speakers increase their speech rate. We found that the same holds for Dutch, irrespective of whether the unstressed vowel is schwa or a 慺ull’ vowel. In the same line, we expected that vowels in words without a pitch accent would be shortened relatively more than vowels in words with a pitch accent. This was not the case: if anything, the accented vowels were shortened relatively more than the unaccented vowels. We conclude that duration is an important cue for lexical stress, but not for pitch accent.

A unified account of prominence effects in an optimization-based model of speech timing

We show how our optimization-based model of speech timing reproduces three effects of prosodic prominence on suprasegmental timing patterns in speech: (1), the durational interaction between lexical stress and pitch accent, (2), polysyllabic shortening in pitch-accented words and (3), differential behavior of prominent and non-prominent syllables under speaking rate variation. We review the lit...

Is Acquisition of L2 Phonemes Difficult? Production of English Stress by Japanese Speakers

This study examined the production of English lexical stress by Japanese speakers to determine which acoustic features associated with English lexical stress are difficult for Japanese speakers to acquire. Realization of lexical accent differs between languages. English is a stress-accent language where the accent is expressed by a combination of pitch, duration, intensity and vowel quality (Fr...

Stress and accent: acoustic correlates of metrical prominence in Catalan

This study examines the phonetic correlates of stress and accent in Catalan, analyzing syllable duration, spectral balance, vowel quality, and overall intensity in two stress [stressed, unstressed] and in two accent conditions [accented, unaccented]. Catalan reveals systematic phonetic differences between accent and stress, consistent with previous work on Dutch, English, and Spanish (Slujter &...

Abstract: This research has been carried out in the framework of Auto segmental-metrical (AM) phonology to study the stress in Persian. Two types of abstract and concrete prominences were distinguished in which the first one refers to the stress and the second one refers to the pitch accent. Stress is assumed to be a lexical property of the lexemes, but pitch accent is assumed to be an intonati...

Acoustic correlates of linguistic stress and accent in dutch and american English

In the literature the same acoustic correlates of stress and accent have been established for Dutch and English, i.e. F0 movement, duration, intensity and vowel quality. Sluijter and Van Heuven (1996a) showed that F0 movement and overall intensity in Dutch differentiate only between accented and non-accented syllables, rather than between stressed and unstressed. The most reliable acoustic corr...
